What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry incorporates different methods designed to make your dental experience comfortable.

The team at Dental Group of Tyson offers diverse services and medications before your procedure to help reduce stress, anxiety, and fear. They also offer several medications to prevent pain during your dental procedure.

What types of sedation are available?

Many patients are familiar with local anesthesia, which is administered directly to the part of the mouth where the dental work is being performed.

However, that’s not the only type of anesthesia offered at Dental Group of Tyson. We ensure your comfort by offering sedation options that deliver different degrees of anesthesia.

Nitrous oxide

You inhale nitrous oxide (laughing gas) combined with oxygen through a mask placed over your nose. The gas helps you relax and reduces anxiety, but you stay awake. Nitrous oxide combined with local anesthesia is a very effective method of pain relief for many patients.

Intravenous (IV) sedation

Sedative medication is administered through your vein, so it goes to work more quickly. This is a high level of sedation, but it’s still not general anesthesia.

When you have IV sedation, you’re conscious and in control, which is why it’s sometimes called conscious sedation. This type of sedation puts you in a very comfortable semi-awake state of reduced anxiety.

What should you do if you or your child has severe anxiety or a dental phobia?

Most people are nervous or moderately anxious about going to the dentist to get dental work done. For some people, it’s worse than that. Their anxiety is severe or they have a full-blown dental phobia.

If you face this type of extreme emotional challenge, chances are you’ll do anything to avoid getting dental care.

Dr. Nahlah understands the differing levels of anxiety, even severe dental avoidance, and they encourage you to call and talk with them about your challenge. He has extensive experience helping patients manage dental fear.

Dr. Nahlah and the team are also great with children. They take children’s fears seriously and love helping them learn that the dentist isn’t scary. To learn more about the sedation options, call Dental Group of Tyson today or book an appointment online.
